The history of Argo
Argo, according to Greek mythology, was the ship that Argonauts boarded in order to go to Colchis to get the «Golden Fleece”. It got its name from Argos, the son of Phrixus and Halkiope, who built it. It was built in Pagases, the port of the city of Iolkos. It was the fastest and most solid ship of its time and extremely light so that it could be carried by the crew on land. Its length was about 50 meters and it had seats for sixty or fifty oarsmen. It is said that goddess Athena placed on his bow a branch of oak from the Dodoni ancient oracle, which had divinatory properties. Ιt could speak with a human voice and warned the Argonauts for upcoming dangers. At the end of the campaign, the Argonauts dedicated Argo to the temple of Poseidon at Isthmus, in Peloponese.
