Argonauts were the crew of Argos, the ship that was built to carry out the Argonautic campaign, that is, Jason's campaign from Iolkos to Colchis on the Black Sea to get the «Golden fleece». The Argonautic campaign, allegorically expresses the second historical great colonization of the Black Sea by the Greeks. The number of Argonauts who took part in the campaign varies from forty-eight to sixty. Argonauts wanted Hercules as their leader, but he gave his turn and indicated Jason who was the organizer of the campaign. Their adventurous journey started from Iolkos, then they passed through Thrace and the Sympligades stones and ended up in the mythical Colchis, where after many adventures they managed to get the «Golden Fleece”. Among the most famous Argonauts were: demigod Hercules, Theseus, Argos the builder of Argo, Ulysses’ father Laertes and Achilles’ father Peleus the Myrmidon.
