Colchis is located on the eastern shores of the Black Sea and at the south of the Caucasus mountain. It has been an area rich in gold, copper and iron mining since ancient times and in the 10th BC was initially colonized by the inhabitants of Caria, in Minor Asia and later in the 7th BC by the inhabitants of ancient Miletus. In Greek mythology, the king of Colchis was Aetis, father of Medea, who had the "Golden Fleece" in his possession. According to legend, the "Golden Fleece" was the reason why Jason and the Argonauts arrived in the area, organizing the Argonautic expedition. They achieved this feat, managing to take it and bring it back to Iolkos city.
